Asthma and allergies may cause some difficulties for your child, but they can still play sports! Being active is actually ideal for children with asthma. Playing sports offers a way for children to maintain a healthy weight, stay fit, and have fun. It also strengthens the muscles and lungs, helping your child to cope with their asthma.

Did you know that one in every six Olympics athletes has asthma? If they can do it, your child can too. Before you send your child out on the field though, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, stay informed. Know the allergy conditions of your area when your child is participating in outdoor sports. If pollen counts are high in your area on a certain day, you may want to keep your child indoors. Also know that pollen counts are at their peak in the mornings, and rainy days can stir up allergies as well.

The next thing to do as a parent with a child athlete who has allergies or asthma is to keep their asthma under control. Make sure to take them to the doctor for checkups, and also make sure they are taking their allergy medication. Keep an emergency medication on hand while your child is playing sports, just in case.

Be sure to communicate with your child’s coach. Let the coach know about your child’s allergies and asthma, and also let the coach know what to do in the event of an attack. Sometimes it is best to keep written instructions in your child’s equipment bag so a coach can read these instructions in the event of an emergency.

Finally, educate your child. Let them know about their triggers when it comes to allergies or asthma. Teach them about what they can do to treat their triggers, and when they should care for themselves if they’re feeling unwell.
